Q:

Im 26 years of age and about a 1 1/2 years I've stopped having periods. Im curious about what could be causing this. Im a mother of 3, I had my first at 18 yrs. I also have hot flashes, mood swings. And, I frankly don't have a passion for much sex.

I don't really have the want to be touch, but I feel bad every time my husband wants to touch me and I just don't feel like it. I feel Im too young to be feeling like this. I also have had weight problems for these past few years since the menses stopped and the hot flashes increased. My weight has dropped drastically for a while and then shot up. Im confused and need help.

Wife and Mother of 3,

I wanted to let you know that we can help you try and get medical coverage for you. There are many Government programs that are readily available for families with children, depending on your income level. Can we possibly try to help you with that? Many States (or Commonwealths) have Children and Family Services that may be able to provide your family with medical coverage with little to no cost. Let us know if you want more information.

Where do you live, Wife and Mother of 3? (Just city and state or zip code is enough). We'll see what we can find to help you out.

Hi, Wife and Mother of 3,

Thanks so much for writing back; I've found a couple things I hope might help you.

Check out this San Antonio clinic for the working uninsured:

http://www.kens5.com/news/health/Faith-Family-Clinic-targets-the-working-uninsured-83358722.html

Here's one "find a clinic" page where you can put in your city, state and zip code and it will bring up names of healthcare clinics in your area. One caution, though: While they should all accept non-insured patients, it looked to me like some were insurance-only:

http://findahealthcenter.hrsa.gov/

And I know Austin is about 90 minutes away from you, but this might be one of your best bets:

If you are interested in them, you might call and ask if they see patients from your county. If they say no, ask them who they would refer you to in Bexar County.

I hope those are a few first steps for you. I'm going to keep notes on this and keep looking.

Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHer, and thanks so much for your question.

Since your periods started relatively late in your teen years and since they have stopped completely now, I am wondering if there's something hormonal going on with you. Have you mentioned that you've ceased having periods to your doctor? If not, it's very important to do this. You may need to have your blood tested for levels of your estrogen, progesterone and testosterone.

Before they stopped, were your periods regular? Or irregular? Clearly, since you conceived three children, everything was in working order for at least a few years.

How young is your youngest child, and are you still breastfeeding? Some women do not get their periods back until after they stop breasfeeding.

Hot flashes, mood swings, a loss of libido, weight fluctuations and a ceasing of menstrual flow are common symptoms associated with perimenopause or menopause, which you are quite young to be having. It does happen, however, and is called premature menopause. It has to do with premature ovarian failure (the ovaries are primarily what govern our "female" hormones.)

This page has a lot of information about Early Menopause, including some fact sheets you can look at to see if this might apply to you:

http://www.earlymenopause.org.au/

Here's a page about premature ovarian failure, which happens to about 1 in every 100 women;

http://www.earlymenopause.org.au/content/view/164/218/

Does this information help?

Will you make an appointment with your doctor to see what she or he says?

Thank You very much for your answer and it really opens my eyes a little, as in with what my next step should be. To answer your questions I started my period at the age of twelve and they had always been regular and mod-heavy. My youngest is 3 years old and I haven't breastfed him since he was 3 months of age. I had one more question I'm not sure if you answered, do you think my lack of desire for sex is related to the hormones???? It must be.
I don't have a doctor Or insurance that is that was why I asked the question but, now you have given some insight and I will have to go to be examined and I will make sure to let them know to check my blood levels. Thanx
