Q:

Implantation or period?

Yesterday, I started having brown discharge. It first started off with a clear discharge with a bit of pink in it two days ago. Then yesterday, I had some dark brown discharge with a little bit of blood and then it turned into just brown discharge. All day today, I've been having just light brown discharge. I know that the brown discharge is usually just old blood. But, is it likely that it could be implantation bleeding or my period starting? My period was "due" yesterday according to the app that I use (stopped the pill in August, cycles aren't regular at all) and the last pregnancy test I took 3 days ago was negative.

Guide

Dear bm23,

Thanks for reaching out to EmpowHer.

The first cause of pink spotting between menstrual periods is ovulation bleeding -- the release of an egg from the ovaries. According to the American Pregnancy Association, some women experience light spotting after ovulating, sometimes the discharge is light pink in color. Brown discharge can happen after your period, but also mid-cycle as well as early in pregnancy, at the time your period would normally come. If your period does not come at all, take another pregnancy test to ease your mind. It's usually advised to wait at least 2 1/2 weeks after sex when levels of hCG are high enough to be detected.

Best,
Helena
