For the past week, I have had severe pain in the big toe on my right foot. The pain is intermittent (every half hour or so), severe, and lasts from 5-10 seconds. Never had any issues before and I have not hurt my foot in any way. Help! Not even sure where to start looking as to why this is happening.

I can't believe how many posts there have been relating to pain in the underneath side of the 3rd or 4th toe. Sounds like very similiar symtoms; periodic and difficulty in putting pressure on the foot when it occurs. It is crazy how it just comes and goes. I looked up the suggestion that it might be Mortons... I don't think that sounds like the answer. Also, shoes seem to be a suggestion as to the cause. I would think that makes sense, except mine occurs when I am barefoot; I rarely wear higher than a 1" heel. I will continue looking for other responses so that we might all be enlightened as to the cause so we can stop doing whatever it is. It seems like such a trivial thing to run to the Dr. for. Hoping to be enlightened.

I found your question after a search regarding big toe pain that sounds identical to your problem. Did you figure out the source of the pain? Do you still have pain?

Hi toehurts - One of the first places to look for a possible reason is your shoes. Sometimes wearing high heels with too-narrow toe boxes, or even regular shoes that are too narrow, can cause toe squeezing that results in pain.
It's also possible that you're dealing with a medical condition. This page on toe pain from The Podiatry Channel mentions how common toe pain is, and tells of some of the common causes:
http://www.podiatrychannel.com/foot-pain/toe-pain.shtml
This article deals with the four most common causes of toe pain: http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/2120719/what_are_the_most_common_causes_of.html?cat=70
After reviewing these let us know what you think and if you have a better idea of the cause of your pain. Hope you feel better soon! Pat
