Me and my boyfriend were having sex when the condom broke, we didn't notice it and he finished inside me. I went and got the morning after pill right away. I experienced terrible nauseous, and the next day i thought i started spotting a bit. It didnt stop and now it has turned so heavy so i am assuming it is my normal period. However i am not due to get mine for about 2 and a half more weeks. I am wondering if this is normal, if it really is my period, and if this will mean my cycle will be messed up or not. I wanted to go on the pill but now i am wondering if that too could only mess with my body more.

( I have used the morning after pill once before, and i experienced none of this, everything was normal.)

Hi Anonymous,

Your girlfriend is not pregnant. Having her period shows that the ECP worked.

Some women, and your girlfriend is one, will have changes in their menstrual cycle as a side effect of the pill. The next monthly period can start earlier or later than expected.

There is nothing to worry about.

But, you both should know that ECP is not intended to be used regularly. It is for emergency situations only. So, if both of you continue to be sexually active but are not ready to become parents, you must both use birth control, a condom for you and some type of birth control such as pill, IUD, patch or injection for her.

Regards,
Maryann

Yes, it can be completely normal to have "breakthrough bleeding" (bleeding in-between your periods) after taking Plan B. It can also be completely normal to have a period that is late or early, for a cycle or two. I know it is really bad timing to take something like emergency contraception, and then be told that it can cause an irregular cycle...at a time when you most need your cycle to be regular!

You can take a home pregnancy test when you are expecting your next period (2.5 weeks), and that should be accurate (assuming you do not have unprotected sex from now until that time).

Your period should become regular again (as it was in the past) within the next one or two cycles.

I'm curious why the condom tore, as this should not happen so easily! Be sure to use lots of lubrication (KY Jelly, Astroglide or similar), and be sure that your partner has left room at the tip of the condom (empty space) to collect the semen.

I hope this helps...please keep us updated!

thanks for the reply. Not sure why the condom broke to be honest! I have been having sex for about a year now and never had this problem. Really wish it hadn't however. I am a bit confused however with your response, should my next period be around 3 weeks after what i am considering is my period coming early now? ( so three weeks from a few days from now) or should i be expecting it in like two weeks ( when i would have been expecting it if i hadnt taken plan b). Also it is possible i am pregnant, even though i am experience what seems like a normal period ( some cramps, same amount of bleeding as usual).? thanks!

Anna,

With the morning-after pill, there's no absolutely-for-sure answer on when your next period will come. But a pregnancy test should be accurate around the time you would expect one (about three weeks from now). The morning-after pill can change your cycle for a month or two, in some women. Since your bleeding is a bit heavy now and you are having cramping, etc, I would guess that you won't have a full period in 3 weeks, maybe some spotting. But it's hard to tell. Like Alison said, I know it's hard when we are so imprecise when it's important to know!! But from what you've said, no, I would say that you are most likely NOT pregnant. Not with the "period" you're having now.
