Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

I got my flu shot at the docs about 3 months ago. My arm hurts at the injection site when I am weightlifting and doing either chest or shoulder presses. The rest of the time, my arm does not hurt.

I am in London and had the flu jab in early November, my first one. My arm had pain from that day with tingling/ pins and needles in my hand starting the next day. The tingling has gone and the pain has eased slightly lately. Sleep is disturbed by the pain every night. I have muscle weakness in the arm so it is hard to garden and carry shopping. I have gone for an X ray and are waiting for the results. The doctors do not want to accept it is related to the flu jab. A few others I know here also have this pain since the flu jab and does anyone know what the cure is for this problem?

I had the flu shot end of October, I have been in extremempain since the instant of injection. My doctor injected cortisone a dew weeks ago and is sending me to a rotator cuff doc. The cortisone hep the shoylder but the pain in the arm relief was only a day, then right back to extreme pain. I didn't have a flu shot last year because of the pain the year before in the arm. It did go away after 2 months, and didnt affect my shoulder, but NOT THIS TIME!
If your pain does go away, I would suggest never getting a flu shot again, but choose the sniffable option.

Frustrated, tired, and in pain =(

I also had a flu shot in November and over the last month have developed a painful lump in my arm. Had an MRI and it showed imflammation. My pain is strictly located on the large bump. My shot also hurt worse than any other flu shot I've ever had, have received flu shot over last 10 yrs. Does anyone also have a large lump at the injection site?

It's been three months since my flu shot. My doctor believes my shoulder pain resulted from being injected too high in the shoulder. I received my flu shot at a Kroger pharmacy, apparently by a technician whom was not well trained. I still have shoulder pain but now it mostly occurs at night while laying in bed. The strength in my arm has not returned to its pre flu shot ability. I'm currently lifting light weights (3 lbs) to help regain my strength. I don't know if the weight lifting or simply the passage of time has helped with the arm pain, but it has definitely improved.

Those of you who have returned to your doctor to inquire about this, can you update us on your findings?

I posted on another thread here (received flu shot in December.....) I have all same symptoms. Got my flu shot for 1st time on 10/8/09. Site was 1 finger below shoulder. After back and forths to Dr., finally got MRI. result is Partial Rotator Cuff Tear. This is likely what others have. Only can find out with MRI. Hope all get the MRI to find out. I don't know how long this will last. Very upsetting to say the least, that we are pained by the ineptness of our injectors. Anyone out there seek legal advice yet? I'm at this point only in Grievance with the HMO. Of course, they will do their own investigating to see if it was due to the injection. Hello!!! Pain immed. after injection. Never had pain in area before. Oh, forgot to mention, lvn used the needle normally used for the buttocks which is larger than the arm one. Well, at this point, I'm just asking for reimbursement of copays and any future copays. Good luck to all. GG

I received my shot in early November and I can't stand the way my arm continues to feel! I have gotten a flu shot for over 12 years now and never experienced this type of pain. Another note on this-this is the FIRST year that it actually HURT to get the shot and it gave my a burning sensation as it was being injected...NEVER had that either until this year....I also am allergic to nothing so not sure what the deal is with this. It makes me cry sometimes at night while trying to get comfortable to fall asleep and from the feeling of helplessness to make this feeling stop.

Hello from Canada! I too had my flu shot in November. I did not have ANY pain until about 3 weeks ago. I can pinpoint the pain to the exact area of my injection site. I can even feel a bump there. I have extreme soreness in my left shoulder, and sometimes a "burning" feeling. I too am having sleeping as it's waking me up and my hand is tingling! The pain is getting worse day by day. Does anyone have any updates to this before I make a doctor's appointment?
Thanks!

I had received a series of anthrax shots before this pain that many described above append to me...i have had 4 out of 5 of these shots but for some reason this latest one has cause a lot longer lasting pain that usual...the pain from the other three went away about 24 hours after the shot...it was more like a stinging pain with the earlier shot but now i cant raise my arm or twist it without discomfort...the person giving the shot i dont believe was really paying attention and in my best belief injected the shot to high causing this pain... its been about 4 weeks now and the pain is still the same..i just hope it goes away soon...i dont believe its whats in the shot, i think its where the person injects it...i know for the last one im going to ask to get it in my buttocks i hear its less painful there..
