Thank you for your question anonymous. Pregnancy tests are usually 98 to 99% accurate. If you feel worried, I would wait another week and try another test. Periods are crazy at times. They are on time, they come, they go....it is pretty common. Stress will delay a period and what a perfect time with the stress of the holidays. Give yourself another week to see if you start, then retest. Keep us posted.

Anytime you have unprotected sex, then pregnancy is possible.

However, a home pregnancy test would not indicate a pregnancy (or confirm that you are not pregnant) until about two weeks after having sex. It takes 10-14 days for a woman to become pregnant after sex (sperm takes a while to travel, fertilize egg, etc).

Since the HPT came out negative, it means that you are not pregnant from any sexual intercourse that occurred 14 days ago. This most recent sexual encounter will not be known if it led to a pregnancy until another 14 days from now. Does that make sense?

Women can have irregular cycles or ovulate at a time when they did not think they would ovulate--this is the reason that it is possible to conceive around the time of your period (it is just not as likely). There never is a "safe" time to have unprotected sex if you are not wanting to be pregnant.

If this is confusing, can you tell us this information:
- When was your last menstrual period?
- Did you have unprotected sex at other times since your last menstrual period?
