Hi Anon - I am a cancer survivor as well as the Cancer Guide for EmpowHER. There is no evidence that eating pureed steamed asparagus will help fight cancer. Thanks for coming to our site to check this out! Pat

Thanks so much for your response and helpful information you have provided. I did, in fact, receive an email forward about it. The very same one that is referenced on the snopes.com page you referenced. No worries! We'll keep eating it because it is healthy and we love it. And any good it does our health, all the better!
Thanks and Kindest Regards~

Hi, Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHer, and thank you for your question!

Can I ask where you heard this about asparagus? Was it in an email that someone forwarded to you?

Asparagus is very good for us, it doesn't have very many calories and it's loaded with nutrients. Asparagus is a good source of folic acid, Vitamin A, the B vitamins, Vitamin C, fiber and calcium. So it's definitely something to have on the menu!

Here is the entry from Snopes.com on this question. Snopes is a website that puts claims to the truth test and tells what's behind them:

http://www.snopes.com/medical/disease/asparagus.asp

That page gives an example of the email that is being forwarded around. The information was supposedly printed in a 1979 issue of Cancer News Journal. However, Snopes has tried to find anything similar and they cannot. They have found no information about the supposed doctor or author (who had D.D.S. after his name, which normally signifies a dentist), or the claims themselves.

So eat asparagus because you like it and because it's good for you in other ways, but don't trust this outrageous claim.
