Hi, I have an appointment with a urologist and it's my first time ever going to see him. I'm wondering what they do as a first visit? The reason I'm going is because I have been told that I might have a benign tumor near my kidney and I want to know what goes on, on a first visit, what they do? Please let me know more about this.

Thank You,
Melissa

Oh my, What would you suggest I do about this? I do know that I have back problem which is called scoliosis (curvature of the spine) and in general I get low back pain and recently I feel pain on the lower left side of my back. I do know that the kidneys are located in the back. I take prescription naproxen for back pain as I need to I do feel better from taking it but I still have this pain on the lower left side of my back. When I touch my back it feels very warm. I want to know for such pain and warmth do you think it's kidney related? I've been feeling pain in this area all day and it feels all warm. I don't know what to take for pain and I keep crying from pain. I'm seeing my doctor next week but I don't know what to do right now. Please let me know about this soon.

Thank You,
Melissa

Melissa,

In 2012, I hope there's not many professions solely held by just women, or men! And urologists help anyone who needs it, no matter their gender. I wouldn't think twice-- if you need to see one, you need to see one. If you're concerned, you can request a female doctor. You'll be fine, don't worry!

Best,

Danielle.

One thing I'm wondering is since I'm going to be seen by a urologist do women also go to a urologist it seems awkward that I'm going to such doctor? I also want to know are all urologists men? Please let me know.

Thanks,
Melissa

Hi Melissa,

Sorry about the late response. As I said, it should be a consultation, but it depends. Best way to find out is to call your doctor and ask. How did it go?

Best,

Danielle.

Thanks for telling me. It's a relief what your teling me. It is my first visit with the urologist and since I might have my period at that time as being my first visit then I don't have to worry if I have my period at that time. First visit do they do anykind of examination in the private area? I know your telling me it's only counted as consultation and I have a bunch of paper work all prepared to bring with me. I'm just hoping everything goes well I was told I have a benign tumor near my kidney.

Thanks,
Melissa

Melissa,

According to about.com, a urologist is a medical practitioner that specializes in urinary tract disorders as well as sexual dysfunctions.

Depending on the purpose of your visit, your experience may vary. On a first doctor visit, you can expect to fill out paper work, and be asked questions to reach a diagnosis. Oftentimes a first visit is more of a consultation. Be sure to be prepared with any health information that may be pertinent to the visit (symptoms etc).

If you've already had a consultation, your urologist may be planning tests (ultra sound, blood work, etc). Other tests may require you not to be on your period.

Your urologist should have provided you with any relevant preparations.

If you have any other specific questions about your visit, it may be best to consult with your doctor.

Best,

Danielle.

I forgot to mention that since it's my first visit I might have my period at that time does he do anything in the private area? This is what I'm really wondering about. Please let me know soon.

Thank You,
Melissa
