Q:

I've had my period for over 3 weeks -- what's going on?

During the first few days of March, I was experiencing a lot of brown vaginal discharge. It isn't the first time it happens, but usually I experience it for a couple of days before my period goes away. This time it happened before, which I found strange. I was a bit worried since I wasn't expecting my period until March 15th (and this started happening on the 3rd, give or take). Then I got my period on the 6th of March. Normal, for the most part painless (which is also unusual for me). It stopped entirely on the 13th. Then on the 15th (day I was originally expecting my period to come), the brown vaginal discharge started again. I figured it would be light and only last a day or two but I was wrong. I'm still experiencing it and today there was actually red blood. So basically, I have had my period since March 6th, with only one day of break in between.

I am 18 years old and sexually active. Have only ever had one partner, and I'm his first partner as well. We use condoms for protection so I know it can't be an STD. I don't take birth control, or any other type of medication. I've taken "Plan B" twice -- but that was over 10 months ago. I've never been pregnant/had a miscarriage. Nothing. We always use protection. And I haven't had intercourse since late April. For the most part I use pads, but I do use the occasional tampon. I've always had an irregular and painful cycle but it's never done anything this strange. My period usually lasts no more than 10 days and it's heavy the first 3-5 days or so.

I'm really concerned here. What's going on?

Doctor prescribed "Marvelon 28". Told me to start the pack today for period regulation. We'll see how that goes! I do have a question about using birth control. Is it still possible to get a sexually transmitted disease if

a) you have only one partner (and he's been your only partner) and vice versa (you're his only partner, he's never been with anyone else)

and

b) you don't currently have any STD's

or should I still be using condoms, even with birth control?

Marvelon 28 should get your period regulated-- great.

If you do not have any STD's and both you and your partner are only having sex with each other then you could not get an STD. HOWEVER, I'm going to play devil's advocate to answer this question-- YOU can guarantee that you don't have any STD's and that he is your only partner but you cannot say the same about your partner. As much as we would love to live in a world where people don't cheat, don't sleep around, and don't bring any sexually transmitted diseases home with them-- nothing is guaranteed. I don't know how long you two have been together but the choice is up to you, just make an educated one. If you share a home together, have been together for many years, and you trust him-- then go for it. If you just started dating and/or you have some concerns about his sexual history and present health then you may want to consider condoms as well; at least for the time being.

Hope this answers your question.

I'm seeing my doctor tomorrow. Still have my period, but it's very light. I was experiencing some cramps last week/during the weekend but they're all gone now. Other than that, I feel absolutely fine.

Anon,

Do you still have your period? Have you called/visited your doctor?
How are you feeling in general?

Theskyisyours,

When was your last period prior to March 6th? Sometimes when women have irregular periods, when we skip one month we have a really heavy/unusual period the following month. However, if you are still bleeding-- three weeks of bleeding is a very long time and you should be seen and evaulated by your Gynecologist.

Please keep us posted! Best Wishes,

Rosa

Last time my period skipped a month was in November. I got it last month (February) on the 15th.
