If this has been going on for some time, and there is no obvious reason for it (a fall, a sports injury) then you will need an examination and possible testing to discern what is wrong. You may have some kind of degeneration in your joints that is causing weakening and pain - possible something like rheumatoid arthritis. Are you having pain in both hips? This could indicate RA. Have you noticed any swelling?

RA can also cause nerve damage, possibly explaining the groin pain. You could have nerve pain without RA or even a groan strain (these can be very painful) that you didn't know happened at the time.
