Q:

Late Period/ Pregnancy?

I started my period on March 10-14. I started again on March 29-April 1 which was a LOT lighter and shorter. It seemed to stop and start all within 4 days. I used a period calculator and it said my period should be on April 19 of this month and I haven't started yet. I just took a home pregnancy test, and it came back as negative. Could I be pregnant or could it be something else?

Hello, just an update: I have still not started my period. I am not sure what to do at this point but to wait

You may want to see your health care provider or gynecologist for a checkup to make sure you don't have any issues going on, and to find out whether you are pregnant.

Good luck.

I calculated it for the March 29th one, yes. My cycles are never on time; they are irregular. I just thought this was a bit odd. I will keep you updated. I greatly appreciate your assistance with this issue :) Any help is appreciated!

You're very welcome, Sbn. Irregular periods are so very common in young women. Don't fret. And let us know when you know what's going on!

Sbn,

When you used the period calculator, did you calculate from your first March period or from the second one? It seems like you should calculate from the March 29 period, and it seems like that would land your expected next period sometime in the area of April 27-29 depending on how long your cycles normally run. At 20, it can be quite common to have an early, late or irregular period for reasons we can't even figure out. See what happens over the next few days. And will you come back and update us?

I am currently 20 years old and yes, I did have unprotected sex. I greatly apprecisate your help with this! :)

Hi Anonymous-

I have a couple of questions: Have you had unprotected sex? If so, pregnancy is a possibility. But your cycle sounds a little funny right now...those 4 days may have been breakthrough bleeding or something. It seems your cycle is a bit off, so I wouldn't expect a period calculator to accurate predict the next one.

You don't mention how old you are, and that could be a factor here. Many things can affect your cycle, and of course if you had unprotected sex that could certainly affect it. We have lots of information and discussion about irregular periods here: https://www.empowher.com/condition/menstrual-cycle

The bottom line is if you had unprotected sex, you risk pregnancy, but it also sounds like your cycle may be off for some reason. If you are not pregnant and it continues, you may want to see your health care provider for an exam and discussion to be sure everything is as it should be, physically and hormonally.

Good luck.
