Q:

Is a late period with significantly heavier than usual bleeding something to be concerned about?

Earlier in the month I had some lower abdominal pain, I'm not sure if it's related. My period is always roughly 28.5 days apart and lasts a maximum of six day, but was at least 3 days late. Today is the fifth day but I'm still having a significant amount of fresh blood, whereas normally by now I would be having a small amount of brownish almost mucousy discharge. I started having abdominal and lower back pain today, I normally have very little pain and never this late. I have had a few clots, not really big, but definitely bigger than anything I normally have. Is this anything to be worried about or is it just an extra heavy period?

Hi, Anon.

Thank you for your message.

Unless you are feeling ill in addition, I don't think it's anything to worry about. Periods can change from time to time. If you are concerned about the abdominal pain being something else and not period-related, see your doctor.
