I am tired of reading the worst-case-scenarios of pregnancy scares on Google and have come to you ladies for REAL advice.
My girlfriend is currently 6 days late on her period and we are both concerned about pregnancy. Her last period was on March 18th and she usually has a 30-31 day cycle.
We always use contraception(Condoms in combination with withdrawal way before I reach climax and always before any touching) and have had sex around 7 times between then and now.

We just took a Clearblue digital pregnancy test and it came back negative. We plan on taking another in three days.
She has been extremely stressed with school (finals and term papers) and also experienced a slight bout of a cold around April 3rd.
I am hoping that the good women of empowHER will be able to give me some advice to this situation.
I love this girl from the bottom of my heart so any experienced answer would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Surface456,
According to the staff of the Mayo Clinic, "Mental stress can temporarily alter the functioning of your hypothalamus — an area of your brain that controls the hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle. Ovulation and menstruation may stop as a result. Regular menstrual periods usually resume after your stress decreases."

If your girlfriend has one or more missed periods and has a negative pregnancy test result, she should make an appointment to be evaluated by a gynecologist, especially with a family history of reproductive health problems.

Hello Surface456,
It is very possible that the increased stress of final exams and completing term papers and a recent bout of the common cold are causing a delay in start of your girlfriend's period. The anxiety associated with a concern being late is enough to cause a late period.

If she still doesn't get her period in the next three days, she should take another pregnancy test as planned.

Thank you for your words of confidence in our roles as site guides and I hope that I provided the advice you were looking for. Your girlfriend is very fortunate to have someone like you as her boyfriend.

Please keep us posted and let us know if we can be of further help.

Thanks so much Maryann!
Could you explain why stress can cause such a long delay? We originally were not worried with a few days, but it seems the longer it takes the more anxious we get.
Also is there a chance that she may skip entirely and no be pregnant?
He family does not have the best utero-health due to genetics.

EDIT: She has also not been experiencing any symptoms of pregnancy.
