I was sick I had fever and I had felt nauseous for about three days. I was on the second week of my birth pill packet and Friday night I threw up like minutes after I took it I take it at 10pm and later went to the ER because of how sick I felt. They gave me a steriod shot and some antibiotics. On Monday like at 3am I threw up and I just slept it off but I had unprotected sex that Monday around noon and he didn't pulled out.We had unprotected sex that week I didn't know throwing up a pill was like missed pill. I been on birth pill for about 3 months already. What are the chances of me being pregnant ?

Yeah i didnt miss a pill or anything but I've been on birthcontrol for four months but last night i was drinking with friends and i woke up around 5:59 in the morning, the usual time i take my pills but two hours later i vomitted because i was still hangover. Though, my boyfriend and i did it yesterday morning before i went out to go drinking. So am i still safe? Will the pill stay effective?

Hi, Siobhan, and thank you for your question. Welcome to EmpowHer!

Whenever you miss a dose of your pill, whether you have forgotten it or, like you, threw it up, you need to double up the next day (take two pills) so that your birth control isn't interrupted. If you don't do this, yes, it would make the birth control less effective.

It sounds like drinking is making you sick quite often. Are you ok? Do you have a problem with drinking?

thanks very much for your reply,no i dont have a problem with drink, im just back at college and I went out with my friends twice in a row, I drank wine which didnt really go down well as I dont usually drink it thats why I think I got sick. I had pasta not long before it,i always eat well before I go out. Will I ask my boyfriend to use a condom as I didnt double up?.

Ah, this makes perfect sense, I remember college days =) LOL. Yes, when you miss two or more pills on your birth control, you should use a condom for seven days afterward (while taking your pills too) so you are protected. After the seven days, you should be fully protected again (you may have a little spotting, though).

Glad to hear it, AmyLei. Sounds like you might be very close to getting your period. Fingers crossed!

And will you promise me that you'll buy some condoms for your purse or bedside drawer to have on hand in the future in case you miss a pill or two? I don't want you to go through this stress again. =)

I took my last pill on saturday. So it is due anytime now. I do feel crampy and a bit emotional like i do when i get my period. With my first pregnancy i didnt know i was pregnant till 7 weeks do to the fact that im prone to cysts in my breast so i didnt notice any abnormal pain there. I only drink water (and alot) so nothing weird there. The only thing i remember as strange is that i felt like i should ba sick all the time but never actually was. I do not have that feeling right now.

Hi AmyLei.

OK, thanks so much for getting back to me. You must be in Canada or maybe the UK? Linessa is sold under different names in different countries.

Linessa is a low-dose birth control pill. Here's what I found about its effectiveness:

"If taken correctly on a daily basis, LINESSA is as much as 99% effective in preventing pregnancy, but there is still a 1% chance that you could get pregnant. Furthermore, missing a pill or taking a pill a few hours later than normal can decrease the effectiveness. Certain medications like antibiotics are also known to increase the chance of your birth control pill failing."

The generic name for Linessa is desogestrel-ethinyl estradiol, and it is available under other names in the United States, but it is the same medicine. Here's what I found on www.drugs.com:

"If you miss 1 dose of Desogestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol , take it as soon as you remember. Take your next dose at the regular time. This means you may take 2 doses on the same day. You do not need to use a backup method of birth control if you only miss 1 pill. If you miss more than 1 active dose of Desogestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol , read the extra patient information leaflet that comes with Desogestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol or contact you doctor for instructions. You must use a backup method of birth control if you miss more than 1 active dose of Desogestrel/Ethinyl Estradiol . If you are not sure about how to handle missed doses, use an extra form of birth control (eg, condoms) and talk with your doctor."

So it's quite possible that you were more vulnerable to pregnancy after you threw up those two pills. But you still should understand that while it's possible, it's still a smaller than normal chance.

When is your period due?
