Thank you or could it be from the emergency pill? Also i remember you telling me that while you are on your period you can't get pregnant. I'm on placebo pills but I got that brownish red instead of the normal period am I still protected. After my bf and had intercourse later at night I bleeded this happen a while ago. I remember I asked the doctor and said maybe is the pill that needs to be increase to a higher dose so now I'm taking a higher dose could it be be cause I switched pills like you mentioned it.

Hi Anonymous,

As long as you have been taking your pills daily, you are protected.

Since you have spoken with your doctor and were told that the dose may need to be increased, please mention this again.

Hello Anonymous,

You do not need to take an emergency contraceptive. Since you have been taking your pills daily and not missed a dose, you are protected against becoming pregnant.

The brown to reddish brown discharge could be the result of switching birth control pills. Please give your doctor's office a call to confirm my thought.

Hi Anonymous,

Your doctor is absolutely correct. There was no need to take an emergency contraceptive pill because you are taking birth control pills, which protect you from becoming pregnant.

An emergency contraceptive contains the same synthetic or man-made hormone found in birth control pills, except at a much higher dose.

Essentially, you overdosed on hormones and really messed up the balance of hormones that regulate your menstrual cycle.

I am glad that you spoke with your doctor. Please follow her recommendations.

Are you less likely to get pregnant while you're on your period?

Hello Anonymous,

Definitely. You cannot become pregnant when you are having your period.

Let me explain with some basic facts.

The menstrual cycle is regulated by the complex interaction of hormones: luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and the female sex hormones estrogen and progesterone .

Ovulation, which occurs mid-cycle, is when a mature egg is released. You are most likely to become pregnant five days before ovulation and on the day of ovulation.

When you are having your period, ovulation has long past; there is no egg to fertilize.

In the absence of pregnancy, the estrogen level decreases, the top layers of the lining break down and are shed, and menstrual bleeding occurs.

Period equals no pregnancy.

Hello Dassie,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for coming to us for advice.

You did not need to take an emergency contraceptive pill because you were having your period and you have been taking your birth control pills as directed. You were never at risk for becoming pregnant.

But, by doing so, you upset the normal hormonal balance that regulates your menstrual cycle. This can have an affect on your next period.

Please report this to your gynecologist and follow his or her recommendations.

Maryann
