My period has been going on for 3 weeks, why?

I'm 17 years old. I had started my period about 3 weeks ago, my periods usually last 2-5 days. I am on birth control and this has never happened to me before. It started out as a normal period, now it seems to get light then heavy. I am in extreme pain. It hurts to even get up in the morning just to use the rest room. I go through anywhere from 2-6 tampons a day. I'm extremely worried. I've told my step mom and dad and they told me it was normal. Help any one?

Guide

Hi Anonymous and thanks for bringing your question to EmpowHER.

Although some pain during your period is normal, excessive pain is not. Although irregular periods are common in young women, three week periods are not normal. The medical term for painful menstrual periods is dysmenorrhea - click on the word to get to more information.

Please talk to your parents again. It would be in your best interests to see your doctor, find out what is causing the pain and prolonged period, and get the relief that you need. Let us know how things work out for you.

Best,

Pam
