Q:

My periods are always unexpected, and un-trackable!

I'm 18, and have had my period for a few years now. It's always very unexpected. I will get one every month for three months and then not get it at all for up for four months, once every two months- just completely irregular times. My family has a history of ovarian cysts, and I was just wondering if this is a symptom? Or a symptom of some other condition concerning hormones? I'm really not sure.

Hi, Anon,

It doesn't sound like you are dealing with ovarian cysts. Here is our page of symptoms (when there are any) that tend to accompany ovarian cysts:

Irregular periods, especially in the teen years, are really common. But yours do seem a little more irregular than most! Have you spoken to your doctor about it?

A doctor can check your hormone levels and see if there's an imbalance there. And if getting you regular -- or practicing birth control -- becomes important, your doctor may prescribe medications (like birth control pills) to help get you on schedule. Is this a concern for you?
