Q:

My periods are very irregular, but usually heavy...Now I'm having a really light one

I have really irregular periods. Sometimes I will skip one month, sometimes two, but usually when i have my period, I go heavily enough to fill a large tampon. Last week, I had sex with my boyfriend a lot, and before that, it had been six weeks since we had had sex. We always use a condom, and we have never had unprotected sex. About 2 days ago, on Sunday, I thought I had started my period, except it was very light and brown, but i could tell there was some blood too, albeit a little. On Saturday we had used lube for the first time, so i thought the brown stuff may have been left over lube. I expected my period to get heavier, but today it is still really light. I am worried that it might actually be spotting instead of my period. I am 19, in college, and so scared right now. I was hoping that perhaps someone could give me some insight on whether I should be completely freaking out right now....the week before last, i was extremely stressed out because of some problems my boyfriend and i had to clear up before returning to college. Could this be stress related?

Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER.  Stress can definitely cause delay on your period.  If you used protection, mostly likely you are not pregnant.  If you are concerned, you might want to take a home pregnancy test.
