Maryann Gromisch RN Guide

Hello Anonymous,

it must be very uncomfortable to suffer with months of vaginal itching and burning, coupled with the frustration of not having any relief.

Vaginal itching and burning are symptoms of vulvovaginitis, which is inflammation or infection of the vulva and vagina. It is very common.

Causes range from a reaction to the chemicals in bubble bath or soap, yeast infections, poor hygiene to an STD called trichomonas vaginitis.

Begin with good hygiene and use a hypoallergenic soap. If the cause is a yeast infection, you would have a thick, white vaginal discharge that looks like cottage cheese. If neither of these apply to you, schedule an appointment with your physician. A pelvic exam, microscopic evaluation of vaginal discharge and biopsy of irritated area may be necessary to make a diagnosis and come up with a treatment that gives you relief.
