Hi there. I'm 39 and have been unsuccessfully trying to conceive for a year and a bit. My doctor prescribed me Progesterone orally and I am to start taking it for seven days, then to expect a menstrual period he said. I'm a little confused and I can't bear the thought of going back so soon to wait another hour and a half to ask more questions. I have irregular periods and have been irregular since the very beginning. I never know when I am going to have my period. So he said to start anytime, then stop after 7 days. After reading some preliminary info on Progesterone therapy this doesn't seem right since there is a lot of info stating that you should take it continuously UNTIL you get pregnant? Is this correct? Please help. I'm totally confused...am I supposed to 'wait' for a period, then wait another two weeks and then take the progesterone again for another set of 7 days? He prescribed me 21 pills. Does it spontaneously make me menstruate after 7 days? When am I supposed to have intercourse then? And then when do I check to see if I'm pregnant...sorry for all the questions, but I am totally new to this whole thing. Thanks!

There are many different kinds of progesterone therapy that are used for infertility and it depends on the reason for your infertility. Yes, the therapy is used to control your periods to help establish an ovulation time which of course is helpful with pregnancy.
Since your physician prescribed you to use the pills for 7 days then to stop, there is obviously a reason and you would really have to concentrate on asking many questions during your next visit or call the nurse at the office to get the exact reasons. Unfortunately, there are so many different reasons for infertility that a clear cut answer will have to come from your treating physician for your specific case.

The fertility monitor is helpful, but only if you have fairly regular cycles. It only detects up to 6 days of fertility...and some women have a longer possible range of fertile days. For instance, it is said that most women ovulate around "day 14", but the actual range can be anywhere from "day 8" to "day 20"...so only a 6 day fertility predictor kit is not helpful in those situations.
If your cycle is fairly regular, and a 6-day window is all you need, it is a good choice!
