no control over food

Hi, I'm 20 years old and I live with my parents while going to school. Since I live with my parents I have no control over what my mom buys for our meals. We do have some "healthier" food, but there's still unhealthy like chips, canned foods, soda, etc. The thing is I can't not eat it. Whatever she cooks I eat, because I'm not going to sit there and say, "No, I'm not going to eat your food I'll make something else". That's rude and a waste of more food. Even when we do have healthier food I'd rather eat the junk food that we have. I can't stop myself. How do I get in control? I've tried asking her to only get healthy stuff but it either doesn't happen or it doesn't last long. I just don't have the will power to say no to the unhealthy food. I also don't have a job so I can't just get my own food just for me. What do I do? I'm 5'7 and 180 pounds I just went into the overweight scale a couple months ago when I checked my BMI. I don't want to get really heavy. I smoke cigarettes and go to the gym but because I smoke it's harder for me to stay more than an hour at the gym everyday if I even stay for an hour. I won't try diet plans like Jenny Craig because it's a waste of money when I could just do it myself if I had control. What do I do? I need help!!!!

Hi Anonymous,
Thank you for your question and welcome to EmpowHer. This is certainly a "I can help you", "If you help me" situation. I would certainly talk to your Mom about you concerns to try and get her to understand your drive and perhaps even providing her some things that you would like to try to start a healthier eating lifestyle will be helpful (www.recipes.com) provides great recipes to assist in your challenge.

Secondly, STOP SMOKING. As a former smoker myself, I will tell you one thing...I am very active myself but I would sometimes choose to smoke instead of working out. This is an unhealthy and obviously something that should be stopped immediately. Smoking is just a detriment to your health so STOP.

Thirdly, when you work out, to lose weight....the most important thing to know is try and provide yourself at minimum 3 days a week of at least 30 minutes of cardio activity. This activity does not need to be high impact aerobics, but rather a possible jog or bike ride….just something to provide an increase to your heart rate.

These are just suggestions but without total control yourself, I know this will be a struggle....but guess what? YOU CAN DO THIS! I have faith in you.

Keep us posted on your progress as you coming to us for advice was the first step in the right direction.

Good luck,
Missie
