Im on birthcontrol pills take them regularly. Only January, I forgot to take 3 pills when I noticed I started a new pack of pills and my period came on February. My boyfriend and I had sex two weeks ago, I took an emergency pill that same day. On January I missed 3 pills and I wanted to be fully protected. This is my first time taking an emergency pill I haven't missed any pills since January and I take them on time everyday. Last week I noticed light red blood when I wiped my self I was on my last week of active pills. Could I be pregnant?

Hi, Dannielamurphy.

Thank you for your post.

Emergency contraceptives are up to 95% effective when taken as prescribed within the first 24 hours, so the risk is very small. Side effects can include stomach aches, headaches, nausea and a general feeling of being unwell. Symptoms usually start 3-7 days after taking the medication and may or may not include bleeding or spotting. Not all women get symptoms. It can also cause your period to be early or late, have a lighter or heavier flow, so be aware of this. It sounds like your period is on its way. If you don’t get your period within a week of its expected date, you can always test for pregnancy, although the risk is low.
