ovarian pain and fatigue

several days before my last period, i started to experience extreme fatigue and a dull, constant pain in my left ovary. i have a history of ovarian cysts and thought i must have another one, but an ultra sound showed nothing and a basic blood test didn't offer any leads. it's been two weeks now and my symptoms haven't improved. does anyone have any advice and/or know of a good obgyn in the phoenix/scottsdale area that might be able to help me? i would like to find an obgyn who uses a more integrative approach and who would be willing to do more in depth tests of my ovarian hormone levels and thyroid function.

thank you,

Dear Stephanie, first of all I am so glad you are looking for an Integrative Medicine provider.

Based on your posting and without proper history and exam, it is hard to guess what may be causing your pain. Do you remember pulling a muscle? Sometimes a minor wrong move can cause the muscles to stretch the wrong way. I am more concern with the "extreme fatigue" you felt right after your period, is your iron low perhaps? Sometimes there is pain from another area of the body reflecting on another side, but instead of guessing, I suggest seeing a doctor as soon as possible if the pain does not go away with Aleve or another anti-inflammatory.

I just happened to know one of the best doctors in your area. I think Dr Tieraona Low Dog, MD is one of the smartest's doctors when it comes to Women's Health using natural approaches. I just heard her at a conference in California and I tell you, she KNOWS her stuff. She is also one of the Director's at the University of Arizona, Integrative Medicine Center. If you click on the link below you can access her assistant's e-mail and set up time for a consultation. Keep us posted!

Hi again Stephanie,

I woke up in the middle of the night and my first thought was "The appendix is on the right, not the left!" Please pardon my goof!! But maybe your pain is still from something else rather than your ovary, like maybe a bowel issue or kidney issue or something. It would be great if your doctor looked at your whole abdominal area for the source of your pain, and I do hope you get your answers soon. Best to you, Nancy Drew Fan

Hi Stephanie,

I am sorry you are dealing with this, but glad to see you have gone to this site, and people have responded to help. Whatever you do, I mean whatever you do... do not let any doctor talk you into having a Hysterectomy - NO MATTER WHAT!!!

See several doctors. Now is the time to absorb the comments made here by others, and see to also you go to get more opinions from other physicians, and also have a family member/friend go with you to each of these appointments you have. Please, oh please do not let a doctor cut into you. Trust me... There are alternatives out there, and do not let the greed of the medical world win you over just to make money; including, the aftermath with a surgery, and only the doctors, hospitals, and pharmaceutical companies win. It is so sad to say that "greed" and profit thoughts by others to make money off of you would be, but it is exactly the case so many millions of times.

You take care, and I wish you the best, my dear comrade, who is searching for answers.

Hello Stephanie,

I'm really sorry that you are dealing with ongoing pain on your left side. Is it possible that it's not your ovary but rather something else? When I read your post the first thing that came to mind was that it's your appendix. I realize that you've had ovarian cysts before and so I can totally understand why you'd think that was going on again, but it's possible that it's something else in the same region that's causing similar pain. I would probably make an appointment to see my regular doctor to see about being examined/tested for appendicitis. Please let us know how you are doing and what you find out, and I hope you are feeling better really soon.

I second Tina on Dr. Ernestine Bustamante Roman! I go to her myself and she's awesome. Extremely knowledgeable, professional, and I especially like the fact that her practice is small so you feel like you're receiving much more personalized attention. I've had a lot of OB/Gyn's in the past, having had four babies, and besides a wonderful OB that I had in Texas back in 1995, Dr. Roman is my absolute favorite. Her office is located on Chandler Blvd. between Dobson and Alma School in Chandler. The number there is (480) 991-6249.

Hi Stephanie -- I go to Dr. Marchese. She specializes in naturopathic treatments for women. She tested my hormone levels when other OB/GYNs would not (turns out there was a problem, too). We have actually interviewed her on the site. Her profile is here: http://www.empowher.com/users/dr-marianne-marchese
and her web site is: http://www.drmarchese.com/home.html She is also a teaching doctor through the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & if you see her through there it costs less.

Hey Stephanie, I'm sorry to hear you're having so much pain. Not sure how far you'd like to travel, but I know Dr. Ernestine Bustamante Roman comes very highly recommended from the women in our office. I have met her personally and really liked her. She practices in Chandler. For more information, visit

Hope that helps. Will you let us know what you find out?

hi Stephanie,

I just did a quick search on EmpowHer, and here are some doctor recommendations in the Scottsdale area that other women have recommended on this site. They are not specifically for ovary/abdominal pain, but may be a good place to start (you can ask their office if they have recommendations for other doctors, too):

Doctor Recommendation for Hormone Pellets on EmpowHer:
- Dr. Deborah Wilson in North Scottsdale for hormone replacement
- Dr Jennifer Simone. She spends time talking with you about your treatment. The office is in North Scottsdale, # 480-661-1485

Doctor Recommendation for Naturopathic Physician on EmpowHer
- Naturopathic doctor who practices in Scottsdale by the name of Dr. Teresa Ramsey.
- Dr. Cheryl Deroin is great. She is at Scottsdale Natural Medicine and Healing Clinic 480.951-0111. http://www.scottsdalenaturalmed.com

Doctor Recommendation for Menopause Relief
- teaching clinic for Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine (SCNM) located at Hayden & McDowell is fantastic and very affordable. I live in North Central Phx and do not hesitate to travel to Scottsdale to see Dr. Marchese. http://www.scnm.edu/index.php
- Dr. James Mouer over at St. Joseph's Hospital on Third Avenue and Thomas Road. For more information: http://www.stjosephs-phx.org/About_Us/For_Physicians/Faculty/095229

Please let us know which health care provider you recommend, after conducting your research, as this is a great resource for other women. I hope you can find some answers, and find help soon. (You can click on orange hyperlinks above, to read entire thread of each post, for more context into why the particular doctor is being recommended).

Dear Stephanie,

I'm so sorry you're having such a tough time. I had several cysts when I was in my 20's and 30's and they are no fun. Let's see what we can do to help you find a doctor in the Scottsdale/Phoenix area.

Sounds like you're a bit frustrated...rightfully so!! Even though your ultra sound came back normal and your blood work looked OK. The fact that you are still having symptoms of fatigue and pain in your ovary is an indication something is not right.

Maybe one of our moderators can send you links to other women who have posted on ovarian cysts. Also, we may have some of our expert videos talking about cysts etc... . This may help you sort some of this out.

You are doing the right thing by looking for a different doctor. You need someone who will help you and listen to you.

Hi Ladies...Can you recommend a doctor for Stephanie in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area?

Stephanie, would you prefer a male or a female OBGYN?

Best in health,
