I took both pills in one dosage, is this dangerous or less effective? Also, what are the usual side effects after taking the pills and how soon after? I took the pills about a 17 days ago and now I'm spotting ( not heavy but blood is present). Could this be a side effect?

Hi Liza,
April 29, 2011 - 5:12pmInformation that I found about Postinor 2 states that your period might be different after taking the pills. Most women will have a normal period at the expected time, but some may have their period later or earlier than normal. You might also have some irregular bleeding or spotting until your next period. If your period is more than 5 days late or is unusually light or unusually heavy, or especially painful, you should contact your doctor, nurse or pharmacist as soon as possible.
When you say that you started bleeding on the 7th day, do you mean that happened seven days after taking the pills. How did this correlate to when you should have gotten your period if you had not taken the pill?

No, it does not make the pills less effective, rather you gave yourself an overdose of hormones. Emergency contraceptives contain the same hormones found in oral contraceptive.

Hi Kennie,
April 6, 2011 - 4:45pmPostinor-2 is formulated to function in a manner similar to the female hormone progesterone, allowing for prevention of pregnancy if taken within a reasonable period of time. Postinor-2 is administered in two doses, spaced out at twelve-hour intervals. It is important to note that if regurgitation occurs within two hours of taking the first dose, it is imperative to immediately take the second pill in the series. That is the only time both pills close together.
Side effects of Postinor-2 can include some nausea that may lead to vomiting, although most women experience only a short period of nausea after the first dose. Fatigue, dizziness, and tender breasts may also result from taking Postinor-2. Generally, these effects will be mild and will fade within a few days. In a very few women, the next period may be unusual. Any changes in menstrual bleeding, or increases in pain from the normal period should be reported to a doctor immediately.
