Pain on nipples after shower

I'm a 16 year old girl and I have pain on my nipples. First, it started off as sharp pain in both breasts. After the shower it's a burning pain. I looked closer at them and saw red marks on them. This wasn't the first time this has happened. I had the same problem a year ago and I remembered that it started to really hurt after a shower.
I'm not sure if it's a type of soap I use or what, but I'm really curious to what the actual problem might be. I'm to embarrassed to tell my mom and last time this has happened it only lasted a day. I looked on Google about the pain and where it hurts but I didn't find anything that explained it.
If anyone knows why this is happening I would gladly love to know what's causing the problem.

Hello Anonymous,

Welcome to EmpowHER and thank you for coming to us with your concern.

What did the red marks look like? Like raised bumps or just areas of redness?

If this is an allergic reaction to the soap, you would notice this every day and on other parts of your body. The pain and redness could be from rubbing to hard and using hot rather than warm water.

Anonymous, when this happens, is it close to the start of your period? I am thinking the nipple pain could be caused by premenstrual breast tenderness and fullness.

Please mention this to your mother. Since it has happened twice, you need to speak with your physician to determine the cause.

Regards,
Maryann
