Hi, I have recently gotten into a relationship with a boy I am crazy about. Within the past month, he has fingered me and I have given him a handjob. We did not have sex as I feel I am not ready yet. He has washed his hands before and after and I have done the same. But my period was due one week ago today and it hasn't come yet. I am very scared and very worried about this. For the past week I have done nothing but think and worry about it. I was also sick about two weeks ago and was on antibiotics for Tonsalitis. I don't know what to do - Anonymous

Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

If you didn't engage in sex you are not pregnant. I know with your period being delayed, that is a normal concern. The antibiotic you've been taking for your tonsilitus is more likely the culprit.
Antibiotics can definitely affect your menstraul cycle. Antibiotics are metabolized in the liver, the same place estrogen is which can change the speed of how estrogen is metabolized and reduce the amount of estrogen in the blood stream. This can cause a delay because we need a certain amount of estrogen to stimulate the ovaries for ovulation.

So give your body some time to adjust.

Be well,
