Hi Anon and thanks for your question.

What you're experiencing is known as 'breakthrough bleeding' and is common. One reason for breakthrough bleeding is missing one or more pills as this causes a drop in hormone levels.

In many cases breakthrough bleeding while taking the pill is due to hormone blood levels not being high enough to keep the uterine lining under control. It takes higher levels of hormones to keep the uterine lining in place than it does to prevent contraception.

Breakthrough bleeding by itself doesn't indicate that you're at risk for pregnancy, but it could indicate that you would be at higher risk for pregnancy if you miss a pill.

If you continue to experience breakthrough bleeding it would be best to see your doctor and determine if a change in birth control pills would be in your best interest.

Hope that helps,

Pam

Guide (reply to Kassyk2)

Drug manufacturers caution that antibiotics can decrease the effectiveness of birth control pills and advise using a second reliable method of birth control when taking antibiotics. Pam
