Prophlactic surgery for those with BRCA 1 or 2 genes

Having made these decisions in 2006 and 2007, I can say that not much has changed regarding "recommendations" or pros and cons. Although there has been lots of recent press about unnecessary surgery, the bottom line, the first place anyone should start the conversation is with a trained genetic counselor to fully understand their risk factors and the rewards to be gained if surgery is chosen. Then, TAKE YOUR time to process all of the information. If you don't understand something, ask questions. The best choice is the choice that works for you. Some people are okay with hyper vigilance (I wasn't one of those people) while others know they would be adversely affecting their quality of life consumed with worry over the next test. Bottom line, we are now partners in our care (or we should be!) and only we know where we fit on the tolerance scale. Also... the featured health poll... Re BRCA gene mutation test.... there's a 5th choice missing and I know that because I am in that 5th category. I was tested and they found two mutations but as of now, they don't know if they are significant or not. I'd love to take the poll but........

A family with the same BRCA mutation, not everyone will develop cancer and those that do may develop it at different times during their life.  It’s important to discuss with your doctor depending on your family history, if you should considered having a mastectomy or removal of your ovaries.
