What is the medical community consensus about having a mastectomy or hysterectomy/oophorectomy upon learning one carries BRCA 1/2?

Hi Anon

There is no consensus in the medical community about this. Some are all for it, some feel the opposite. In face, since it's the woman's choice on what to do, it seems there has been more of a fracas in the women facing this choice/dilemma than their doctors.

Doctors can only advise but it's the woman who made the decision - as it should be.

Every doctor will have their own personal and professional opinion on the topic. Some believe mastectomies and hysterectomies are sensible preventative measures. Others believe watchful waiting is far better. There is no 'general' consensus on this matter.
