Q:

Question here about type 1 vaginal herpes.

My girlfriend has type 1 herpes of the vagina. It makes perfect sense that it would not be a good idea to give her oral sex due to the high risk of catching the infection in my mouth. But I was wondering is contact with the anus orally could also transmit the virus if no contact with the vagina or vaginal juices occurred. Thanks for your help!

What if she has no blisters or any form of breakout at the time?

Anon,

The short answer to your question is yes, the herpes 1 virus can be transmitted by oral and anal sex. Basically, anytime that the fluid from the blisters can transfer from person to person, the virus can be transmitted. Here's our EmpowHer page on it, which is very detailed:

https://www.empowher.com/media/reference/genital-herpes

And here's what genitalherpes.com says about transmission:

"Transmission is caused by close oral, anal, or genital contact, including intercourse, masturbation, kissing, or any direct skin-to-skin contact which allows for the transfer of bodily fluids."

This will give you more information:
