Hello,
My mother has 2 moles one on her left temple and the other on the right temple her dermatologist said that she needs to have both biopsied b/c one looks "crusty" the other one she said she dosen't like the texture of it, does this mean she has melanoma? As her daughter i'm deathly afraid and worried for her. Its not having the biopsy done that worries me it just the waiting period and what the results will reveal. I would really appreciate any advice anyone can offer! Thanks so much.

Hi,
You are welcome. The first step in treatment is surgical removal of the melanoma. Sometimes, this can be done in the dermatologist's office or as out-patient or ambulatory surgery. Next is the staging process. Analysis of the removed tissue helps the physician know how advanced the cancer is. Then, it will be determined if chemotherapy or radiation is necessary.
Though this may seem very overwhelming and frightening, I suggest that you take it one day at a time. Get to July 27, get the biopsy results. Once you know what you are dealing with, you can then ask what the treatment choices are, what is the most that can be done, what is the least and what are the side effects.

Hi,
I can understand your concern, but the only way to know if the moles are cancerous is to have the biopsy done and wait for the results. Microscopic analysis of the biopsied tissue will show what type of cells are present. Generally, biopsy results are available within 3 to 7 days. Early detection and intervention offers the best prognosis. Though waiting is hard and the unknown can be frightening, all you can do is wait. Wishing all goes well.
