Hi Anon!

Thank you for reaching out to EmpowHER with your question!

When water on the brain occurs in adults, headaches, impaired vision and trouble staying awake may occur. Patients may have difficulty with their balance and coordination. Cognitive functions may become affected, including trouble with thinking, concentration and memory.

The MayoClinic.com noted that the symptoms of water on the brain differ when the patient is age 60 and over. These symptoms include memory loss, poor coordination and loss of bladder control. Patients may have slower movements. Other symptoms of water on the brain include difficulty walking and a progressive loss of reasoning and thinking skills.

Anon, having this surgery at 90 is obviously high risk. There is the risk of being under general anesthesia and also of symptoms becoming worse after surgery.

Your father (if he can) or you as his advocate will have to discuss deeply the pros and cons on this surgery with his doctors. They will have far more knowledge about his condition.

Anon I wish you and you father the best and I hope you all come to the right decision. Please let us know how things go.
