Hi. I am a healthy 45 year old female. Last week I was doing some weights. I didn't feel like I overdid it. Two days later I had a pain on my right front rib which hurt to the touch. It seemed to travel to my right side. And this weekend I went for a walk and felt something pop in my back. Pain went from front, side to back. Now I'm in severe pain. Not sure if it was a muscle pull or something more.

Hi, Healthnut,

Welcome to EmpowHer, and thank you for writing!

Since your injury happened just two days after you were working out with some weights, that does seem to be a primary suspect in your problem.

One of the things that happens when we hurt a muscle or a tendon is that other muscles and tendons tend to take up the slack, which is one way pain can travel from one area to another. They can get constricted and tight with the pain and inflammation and affect everything they are connected to.

Did you work with a weight or weights that specifically would target the ribs or upper abs area?

Where is the pain the worst? At the site of the original pain, or in your back?

Have you ever had a bruised or cracked rib? It can cause intense pain, and pretty much has to heal on its own. But it would have/should have hurt right away.

Hi Diane. Yes, I was working core and chest and doing some twisting oblique moves which is why I originally thought it was from this workout. However the pain is in front and sides of ribs then Sunday while I was speed/power walking, felt a tear this time in my back, which by the way is feeling better.

Thank you for responding. I will wait it out and hope it heals soon as I don't like not being active.

If you still have pain after 7-10 days, it would also be recommended for you to call your doctor, or go to a Walk-in clinic for a medical evaluation.

Let us know how you are doing!
