I'm getting sharp pains around and under my right nipple. It comes in waves, not continuously, but frequent. Has been off and on today and yesterday, and I think a few days ago. Can't feel any lumps. I'm 47, not pre-menstrual, have three children youngest aged 11. What is the likely cause please? I am extremely stressed at the moment and have been for several months, is this likely to be a factor?

Hi Anon,
Thank you for sharing you question with the EmpowHER community!
There are a couple of things that can trigger/cause nipple pain. Things like potentially hormonal imbalance, friction, pregnancy, allergies, skin conditions or it could be a symptom of your menstrual cycle.
Is the pain in both or just one?

Thanks for the reply, Gillette. It's mostly just the right one, but occasionally both. You think it might be hormone-related even if I've recently had a period?
