Q:

Is she going to get pregnant?

So my girlfriend and I were on the couch and she proceeded to give me a handjob until I came on her hands but I caught some of it as well. She went and washed her hands and I washed mine twice and dried my hands off with two different towels on two different occasions, about 10 minutes apart. About 20 minutes later she wanted me to finger her. So I did. Is she going to get pregnant? I am scared to death. We're 15 and it's definitely making me think twice about how old and responsible I really am. She says her tummy is feeling a little weird, but her period is also coming in a week or two (she has irregular periods already and her periods normally last about a week to a week and a half). Someone please answer. I'm losing my mind here. Thanks.

Hi Anonymous and welcome to EmpowHER.

It's highly unlikely that your girlfriend will become pregnant, based on what you have described, but you should both be aware that sperm can live outside the body for about an hour before it becomes inactive.

One does not become pregnant instantly nor do pregnancy symptoms appear immediately. Stress and anxiety, however, can result in an increase in stress hormones which in turn can impact the menstrual cycle and change a period's timing, flow and more.

If you are truly thinking about how old and responsible you are then it would be good to get a grounding in basic sex matters and to consider using contraception, such as condoms, both for your own sake and that of your girlfriend.

Hope that helps,

Pam

Would the sperm have washed away though with the soap and water and the hand drying? I heard that sperm needs the liquid surrounding it that it comes out of the penis with to continue to survive right? And doesn't the air surrounding it kill it because the air kills the sperm?

Hi Anonymous - Yes, washing your hands with soap and water should have removed all of the sperm. In terms of sperm survival outside the body it will remain active for about an hour. In general, if the semen is still wet it may have live sperm. Air does not kill sperm. Pam
