ask: Should I ask for a hysterectomy?

At the age of 19 I had a cold knife conization to remove severy dysplasia (CIN3) and am no 38 with a 15 yr old daughter. They are telling me I have carcinoma in situ and need a LEEP procedure. I am wondering, since I have had high risk HPV for his many years and it keeps giving me grief, should they not be recommending a hysterectomy by now?

Hello Anonymous,

You need to ask your physician why he or she is choosing to perform a LEEP and not a hysterectomy.
Review the risks and benefits of each procedure with your doctor.
Is your age is a factor in choosing one procedure instead of the other?
Does medical insurance or lack of coverage play a role in this decision?
Express your concerns and thoughts with your doctor. Be sure you feel comfortable and fully informed before agreeing to any procedure.
