Q:

Should this lump cause concern?

So my boyfriend has a lump on his head, just behind his ear. It's soft, slightly moveable and small, it's not really that visible just by looking, but you can feel it. He insists that its nothing but I'm concerned as I believe that with every lump you should get it checked out, just to be on the safe side. So anyway, do you think I'm over reacting? And what is it likely to be?

Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

Anytime there is a lump, there is cause for concern. Although it may not be serious like in the case of Cancer, it could be a cyst (a benign growth). Either way, he should get it checked out. Even if it is a cyst it could grow in size and need to be removed. Also, the lump could represent some sort of infection in or around a hair shaft a condition is called folliculitis.

Inflammatory conditions of the scalp, such as seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis, may also cause small lumps. So no you are not overreacting, there is cause for concern. Does he have any pain in that area at all?

It's best not to ignore things even if there is no pain associated with it. I would recommend that he have his doctor check into it.

I hope this helps.
Be well ,
