Sinus Surgery Again - What Are My Mom's Options?

January 6, 2009 - 12:54pm 418 reads 3 comments

My mom had sinus surgery about 6 years ago. However, she is still faced with horrific sinus infections.

Battling sinus infections so often she practically has her ENT on speed-dial and literally has an automatic prescription refill plan, she's looking for new options.

No longer wanting to suffer every three months or so with week-long infections, she is looking for all available treatments.

Her ENT is now suggesting she undergo nasal septum surgery, but what are other options for her?

Now considering both invasive and noninvasive procedures, she just wants to lay all her cards on the table before going under the nasal knife once more.

What treatment options should she consider?

I am sorry to hear about your mom having to undergo the stress of sinus surgery, just to have post-op infections!

I am doing some research for you, but in the meantime, has your mom thought about getting a second opinion? I just read at John Hopkins' Sinus Center that they have a procedure called "Revision Sinus Surgery", and their medical team may be able to consult with your mom (and/or a conference call with your mom and her doctor) about her other options (beyond surgery).

The last sentence on their page caught my attention: "We are dedicated to providing outstanding, intensive post-operative care for as long as necessary to achieve optimal surgical outcomes for our patients."

I'll keep looking into other options for you!

Shannon,

Has your mom tried any of the sinus irrigation systems? I dislike providing brand names of treatments that I have no personal experience with, but here is one that seems popular: http://www.hydromedonline.com/. Again, I have no personal experience with this, do not know if it is harmful, helpful or a legit company...but something to ask your mom's doctor about.

Something I forgot to ask earlier: what are the causes of your mom's recurrent sinus infections? Was the sinus surgery successful for it's goal, but now she has infections? Are the infections from surgery or something else?

I believe she has a deviated septum, but I'm going to have to call and ask her or have her get involved in this discussion for more details.

Also, the infections are not due to the surgery, they've just continued after having the first surgery and now she may have to have another.

Thank you both for your responses. You have both been helpful and I will make sure she receives the information you've provided so far!
