Q:

Stress delaying period, or pregnant?

I read that stress can delay your period. I am currently 8 days late, had unprotected sex 5 days before my period was supposed to begin, but was not ejaculated inside of.
My research findings on the web say that stress can only effect your ovulation, and not your flow. I wasn't stressed when I was ovulating, but had a stressful life event happen the day after my period was due, and have been greatly effected by it ever since. I went to the Dr. yesterday, and tested negative for pregnancy. Can it be too early to tell? Am I pregnant, or is this stress causing me to have a delay in AF? Does stress cause AF to come late, or does it just delay ovulation?

Hi Anon,

I am sorry that you are feeling so hopeless. Be careful about what you read on line as every woman's body and situation are so different. Reading just a few negative experiences can really lead you into a downward spiral emotionally and make you worry about the worst case scenarios.

You are best off trusting what your doctor says and following his or her treatment plan to find out what is going on. You can always get a second opinion-but the Internet should not replace a medical opinion by a licensed health care provider.

Hang in there till your test results come back.

Best,

Kristin

The Dr. took a blood test and was going to check for hormone imbalances. I'm 29, and freaked out. I had a small amount of brown blood on my underwear, the day after my period was due, and I have never spotted before, so I def freaked out that it was implantation bleeding. And then Something happened that caused me to be more emotionally stressed than ever before. Im just obsessed reading stories online that are freaking me out even more. Like the time frame I had sex and missed my period, that it wouldn't show on the test. But I was exactly a week late and sex previously 5 days before. I know my chances of ovulating are not high at that time. I also know by 12 days after the sex it should show. I also know that it's only a 4% chance of conceiving when using the pull out method, which I watched him pull out and finish himself after 4 or 5 strokes. Ughhhh. I just feel hopeless. This happened once when I was 22 and I didn't menstruate for 22 days.

Hello scared,

Thank you for reaching out to the EmpowHER community!

Since you are 8 days late, a pregnancy test will most certainly be accurate by this time. What did your doctor say about why he or she thinks your period could be late?

If the pregnancy test said negative, most likely you are not pregnant and stress can affect your period. If you don't have it in a couple of days, it's best that you call your doctor again.

As for right now, try not to stress out, it's very unlikely that you are pregnant.

Did this help?

Best,

Kristin
