Sudden Irregular periods

I'm 34 years old and my periods are normally very regular and have always lasted 5 days. Last month it was 2 days shorter and this month I started 3 days early but very light. Have been cramping for a couple weeks and pretty tired. Any idea what could be causing my sudden irregularities??

Hi, Anon.

Thank you for writing us today.

Many things can cause irregularity. Stress and anxiety can often cause irregular periods. Cortisol, the stress hormone, has a direct impact on how much estrogen and progesterone (sex hormones) get produced by the body. If you have too much cortisol in your bloodstream, the time and flow of your cycle could change. Other factors can be a sudden lifestyle change, sudden and excessive weight loss or weight gain, over-exercising, certain medication or illness. Many times it's a hormonal imbalance which your doctor can diagnose.
