ask: Three missed periods and trying to get pregnant

I am 28 years old.I have had three consecutive missed periods. My last period was due on 28th Oct. Last month, Dec 2010- The blood test results were negative for pregnancy and no hormonal imbalance was detected(no PCOS). Vaginal ultrasound showed increased follicle size and GP advised that it means I could be ovulating and/or my ovaries were about to release an egg. Although a period was missed. Since last week I am experiencing severe abdominal cramping, sore nipples and tender breasts, mood swings etc which are typical PMS symptoms. I have been spotting since yesterday, no period started yet. Wonder what's happening? Not sure if I could be pregnant as home test came negative. My partner and i are trying for a baby. should I wait until my menses are regulated? Could you please help?

Hi Sinali,
Thank you for your question and for joining EmpowHER. If you have been spotting since yesterday, you likely are having your period. How long have you been trying to get pregnant? Did your healthcare provider say how long you should try before seeking possible medical help? Is your medical professional concerned about how irregular your periods are? Are you able to track periods, and ovulation at all?
Sorry to ask so many questions. Bear in mind, we are not doctors, we can only provide resources to help you better advocate for your health with your doctor.

Thanks for you reply Christine. When I consulted the GP last month, he said everything seemed to be okay (despite the irregular periods which could have been due to stress as I had moved houses around that time) and that we should just continue with baby planning as normal. He asked me to go and visit him in February if still no period. I know Feb is just around the corner, it's just that I was really confused about my symptoms. Since I have missed 3 periods so far, I don't know which will be my next period date. Last week I did feel that I ovulated (by cervix position and mucous). Upon being intimate with my partner that night, the next day I had tender breasts and sore nipples. it's hard to believe I would get any pregnancy symptoms so soon so I attributed these symptoms to PMS. This week monday, I started cramping and spotting and I'm still waiting for the period(Thursday). I guess I should just wait for few more days and see what happens although I wonder if I am the only one with all these weird and confusing symptoms....

Hi,
Pregnancy generally isn't detectable until at least 10-14 days after having intercourse where an egg was then fertilized. You may want to call your health care provider today to explain the spotting and see what they suggest or think could be going on?
Good luck, and hope you get the answer you're looking for.
