Wondering if anyone knows what can cause your t4 to be low, and thyroid peroxidase antibodies to be present with a normal tsh. My dr was pretty vague, he just started me on levothyroxine.

My levels were:
Tsh: 1.39
T4: 0.54
Thyroid peroxidase antibodies: 40

Hi tnt07

Thanks for reaching out to EmpowHER with your question!

We can only speak generally but a low R4 with normal Tsh often means the cause is found in your pituitary gland.

The pituitary gland is responsible for the secretion of many hormones traveling through our bodies and is often referred to as the “control center” because of the many jobs it handles .

The pituitary is a small gland. It is at the base of the brain. The gland makes hormones that regulate growth and the activity of other glands. A pituitary adenoma is an abnormal growth, or tumor, in this gland. Pituitary adenomas are benign. This means they are not cancerous. They do not spread to other parts of the body. The growths can lead to vision and growth problems. It can also disrupt the hormonal balance. This could be a cause of your problems but again, we can only hazard a guess.

Thyroid peroxidase antibodies could mean your immune system is low and could be evidence of an auto-immune illness.

Please schedule a talk with your doctor for an explanation of what these results mean for you.

I hope this has helped.
