I am having right knee pain or stiffness in the knee when i get up and walk few steps after sitting for a long time. This problem is there since 4-5 months. I thought it should be some sprain and it will recover, however, it continued for 4-5 months. I again tried treadmill walking and cycling with some basic exercises since 1 week. But still i am having this type of knee pain after getting up from sitting position and pain in both the knees while climbing up stairs. My question is that can i continue going to gym and walk the motorized treadmill and do the cycling wearing my sport shoes ( i am weighing 79.5 kilos) or else should i hold back. If so please suggest me what can be done to eradicate this knee pain and to lose weight in different manner.

Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER. Treadmills are a great cardiovascular workout. But, knee pain is a common symptom associated with overuse of treadmill walking and running.  You might want to stop the use of the treadmill and see your doctor to have imaging test done.  It’s important to know what is really causing the discomfort in the knee, before you continue any time of exercise.  Your doctor might suggest giving it sometime before going back to the gym and working out or doing other type of exercise that is less stressful for the knee. Hope this was helpful?

Best,
