Q:

A visitor came to visit in the hospital and had shingles for 2 days and held a newborn baby. Is the baby at risk?

Hello Anon

Thank you for writing.

Shingles is contagious to someone who has not had chickenpox nor the vaccine against it.

Shingles is only contagious in the blister phase. Once the blisters have gone, a person is no longer contagious. The contagion lies in any liquid in the blisters. If they are dry/crusty, a person is no longer contagious. As a precaution, nobody with shingles should be holding a newborn baby at a hospital.
Best,
Susan
