Vulvodynia and pregnancy?

I'm wondering if anyone has any information about vulvodynia & pregnancy? My pain has been the worst it has ever been since I fell pregnant (currently 15 weeks) and I'm worried about childbirth etc as well.

An OBGYN friend of mine told me that she suspects that often times, pregnant women under the impression they're suffering from vulnodynia may actually have vulvar varicosities, which is when you get varicose veins down there while pregnant. There' s an article here on Empowher about it that's pretty informative ( https://www.empowher.com/community/share/vulvar-varicosities-varicose-veins-worst-all-possible-places ).

It apparently varies in its degree of severity. Some women require surgery, some others can get by with a compressive undergarment called a v2 support ( http://prenatal-cradle.com/v2-supporter/ ).

Either way, you're looking at a lot of pain. That said, if I had to choose between the two I'd take vulvar varicosities over vulvodynia any day of the week.

Hi Anonymous,

Thank you for your question and welcome to Empowher. Are you taking any topical treatments for the vulvodynia? This may help to combat the pain associated with the chronic pain. You should always consult your physician since you are pregnant about any treatments for your pain. I hope this helps and can you keep us posted?

Thanks,

Missie

Hi Missie,

Thanks for your reply. I don't take any topical treatments for vulvodynia - what are the options? None have ever really been suggested to me. I'm pretty sensitive down there so would have to be careful about what I use.
I asked a dermatologist that I've seen in the past what her experience with vulvodynia and pregnancy was - she said normally (although not always) the condition improves throughout the pregnancy. So I'm kinda hoping that I'll see some improvement at some stage. Not entriely convinced though as I have always thought my vulvodynia is hormone related and obviously my hormones are going crazy right now and that will continue! Fun & games hey?!

Thanks,
Jess
