I have always heard mixed reviews when it comes to getting flu shots. Some people are for them while others are strongly against them. What are the pros and cons of getting a flu shot?

Hi Anon

Thanks for your question.

Peak flu season is February so there is still time for those who want a shot but haven't done it yet!

The pros of a flu shot are obviously that they help to prevent getting the flu in the first place.  But a con is that the shot only protects against certain, common strains and there are many strains out there. If you get a strain that wasn't in the vaccination then you'll suffer the flu.

Other benefits are feeling well all winter, not being ill over the holidays, few sick days and a healthier immune system, as having the flu can lower your immune system's strength.

Another issue to think about is a rare, but possible, allergic reaction to the shot that could lead to anaphylaxis or even death.  Many people have been jabbed incorrectly with a needle causing mild to severe injury to the upper arm or shoulder.  You can read more about that here:

It is thought that the benefits of the flu shot far outweigh the risks. About 20,000 people a year die of flu complications every year.

Are you thinking of getting a shot, Anon?
