What are some of the things that can happen as a result of having a kidney removed?

Has anyone had just one kidney removed? What was the reason for it? I have a family member who has a tumor on his kidney and it continued to grow slowly. They did a biopsy with a needle and came back cancerous. Now they want to go in robotically, remove the tumor, bag the kidney and send him home the next day. Could that be possible??

Hi Anon

Thanks for your post!

We are unable to tell you what's going on or what is appropriate/normal in the case of your family member. Only medical professionals familiar with his health history and current circumstances can help there.

But we can tell you a little about kidney failure. It is caused by a variety of things including cancer, blockages and reduced blood flow to the kidneys. Poisons or toxins can also cause kidney failure.

Living with one kidney is entirely possible - you can read all about life with one kidney on the National Kidney Foundation website here: http://www.kidney.org/atoz/content/onekidney.cfm

I hope this has helped-
