Out of nowhere I began having severe allergy symptoms like congestion and sneezing. I tried Benadryl, but it really made me drowsy and feel really strange all day. And the non-drowsy allergy medicine I tried didn't seem to work.
Does anyone have any suggestions for the best non-drowsy allergy medicine to take?

Thanks Maryann, this helps a lot! When I was little I used to have really bad allergies. I took Benadryl when they were severe, but it always made me really drowsy and sleepy in class.
I've tried Claritin before, but have had mixed results. I'll have to try Zyrtec next time my allergies flare up again. That's good to know it won't make me drowsy during the day too!

Hello Erin,
The body produces histamines in response to allergens, such as pollen, animal dander or dust mites. Histamines cause the tissue in your nose to swell (making it stuffy), your nose and eyes to run, and your eyes to itch. Sometimes you may also get an itchy rash on your skin, called hives.
Antihistamines are the first treatment choice to combat these symptoms. They reduce or block histamines. Older or first generation antihistamines, including Benadryl, tend to cause more side effects, particularly drowsiness.
Newer-generation antihistamines such as Allegra, Clarinex, and Zyrtec have fewer side effects, so they may be a better choice. I use Zyrtec daily. It is effective and does not cause drowsiness.
Hope this helps,
