Hi Anon,

Welcome to EmpowHER.  The most common cause of ascites is advanced liver disease or cirrhosis.  Although the exact mechanism of ascites development is not completely understood, most theories suggestportal hypertension (increased pressure in the liver blood flow) as the main contributor.
