ask: What causes light pink mentrual bleeding?

My period has been pretty regular since 2006 coming every 25-28 days. It usually lasts 7 days and is very heavy and dark red. My last two periods were different, one lasting 5days with brown spotting and the most recent was light pink and heavy but only lasted two days.

Hi Anon

Thanks for your question.

Our periods can change as we change. How old are you? If you are 40 or over, you may be entering the perimenopausal stage where your reproductive cycle changes as you leave your reproductive years behind.

It could also be something to do with a hormonal shift. Brown blood usually indicates old blood but a "pink period" can also be normal, depending on the "pink"! Is it barely visible? Or is is a really light red? If it's the latter, it's probably normal. If it's really light (flow) and very light pink, it may not be your period. Is there any chance you may be pregnant? Are you in good general health, otherwise?

I'm 27 years old. It's a really light pink, with clear stuff. I had a tubal ligation in 2004, and the only health issues I have are gastrointestinal.

Hi iladivine

Thanks for your update. A tubal shouldn't be causing this for you and it was 7 years ago now. You were very young to have a tubal ligation - were you 20 or 21?

If your next period is the same way, put a call into your doctor. You may have some underlying issue going on that needs to be looked at, since this has happened out of the blue and at 27, the likelihood that you are entering perimenopause is very slim.
Will you keep us updated?

As for myself, I am 39 year old with a 25 day cycle. Spotting for the first day, a regular flow the second and third days, and ending with spotting for the final two days. Last month and this month I have started my periods with light pink drainage and cramping. I have had right sided ovation cysts that have ruptured and wonder if there is any correlation...

Hi Anpnymous,

Your period cycle does not seem that uncommon as mine period is pretty similar and I do not have cysts. If you do have ruptures of your cysts, this certainly can cause vaginal bleeding when they erupt. If you have concerns, see your physician.

I hope this helps.
